How Often for Microdermabrasion Treatments?

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that many have heard of but may not fully understand. This amazing cosmetic treatment involves more than just a deep exfoliation of the skin using small crystals, it tightens pores, brightens, and clears the skin on a much deeper level than what patients can merely do at home. With this treatment, the top layer of the skin, which is often damaged and dead, is removed to unveil a fresh new layer of skin that is more radiant in appearance. Though microdermabrasion treatments sound rough, they’re a gentler alternative to standard dermabrasion; and yet, they still manage to provide amazing results.

The Frequency of Treatments

Weekly treatments will be needed at first. However, once the initial period has passed, the results may last for up to three months. Patients love the results and are thrilled as they see new skin emerging. The exfoliation process that makes up microdermabrasion stimulates the production of these new skin cells and helps the skin rejuvenate more quickly. As each treatment is completed in under an hour, patients find they can continue with their normal routine in no time at all.

The Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion offers numerous benefits. Patients who undergo the procedure find their skin tone and texture evens out. In fact, many state their skin appears as if it has been polished. The appearance of mild blemishes on the skin is minimized, and the treatment works to encourage new skin growth. This may seem counterproductive to the person as he or she leaves the office with slightly reddened skin or mild swelling. However, these side effects disappear on their own within 24 hours, and patients are left with improved skin in the area being treated.

Skin Conditions That Benefit

Acne scars respond well to microdermabrasion; thus, many patients opt for this procedure over others offered to treat these blemishes. Men and women who find they have developing lines on the skin turn to this treatment, as do those who have dry and flaky skin conditions. In fact, any visible signs of aging often respond well to microdermabrasion, so keep this in mind when choosing which treatments are right for your needs. Patients with clogged pores often benefit from the procedure, and the same is true for those who have uneven skin pigmentation. Melasma symptoms improve, while blackheads and whiteheads often vanish away with this form of clinical treatment. Microdermabrasion can even be of help to those who have oily skin or enlarged pores. Ultimately, patients who are starting to experience signs of facial aging, while still dealing with acne, oily skin, and large pores will benefit from microdermabrasion therapy.

When Microdermabrasion is NOT Recommended

Individuals with deep wrinkles will not be satisfied with the results provided by microdermabrasion. They’ll need more intensive treatments like Botox and/or facial fillers to smooth out wrinkles and diminish lines about the face. Redness and growths are also NOT addressed when this option is selected, as they don’t respond; therefore, dark spots and sun damage on the skin will remain. Furthermore, patients with skin cancers and excessive growths on the skin and facial areas are not recommended for the microdermabrasion procedure. For this reason, it’s best to see an experienced Cosmetic and Facial Plastic Surgeon like Dr. Patt, who can evaluate your skin and make recommendations on which procedures should be used to bring about the best results based on patient need and certain medical conditions.

Dr. Patt has been working with Houston patients for nearly 20 years, and during his initial consultations, he will always provide an assessment and sound recommendations to help patients determine the correct treatment plan for their unique situation. At the Houston Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Patt and our staff’s goal is to always help you achieve the aesthetic results you desire, from the clinical microdermabrasion treatment to Botox, facial fillers, and any of our surgical procedures you opt to undergo.
